Sandra L Kavka Martin
Artist Bio
Sandra “Sandy” Kavka Martin is an Arizona watercolor artist raised on a remote Wyoming ranch homesteaded by immigrant grandparents. Her work denotes how many memories shift with time.
One of Martin’s most memorable childhood gifts was a box of crayons, especially the mysterious depth of midnight blue. Her first paintbrush came from her father to paint deep green trim on the family’s white farm buildings. In a rural school with no art classes, she carefully rendered maps and anatomical diagrams—using a ruler to ensure precision, a habit formed from the childhood rule of coloring within the lines and insistence that trees are not purple. Growing up immersed in the rhythms of rural life, those experiences instigated deep appreciation for varied and rich themes in creation. It continues to shape her curiosity and desire to cause viewers to find what they might otherwise have overlooked.
A journalism degree led Martin to work in editorial print and broadcast media, development and sale of her own businesses, and executive careers in hospitality and healthcare. Civic, arts, and faith leadership positions reinforced a disciplined mindset grounded in detail, accuracy, and expectation of doing things exactly right—making adult exploration beyond those early boundaries gradual. Watercolor, to Martin, is a medium that invites intention while resisting complete control. It has become a place for her search to balance structure with responsiveness to what the paint suggests. Her first artistic engagement was with stained glass, which affirmed her love of color and deepened her curiosity about how color, light, and structure can “sing” beautifully together. Subsequent watermedia workshops launched her into writing stories in paint while learning to suggest rather than expound, and resist including every detail. A signature member of the Northern Plains Watercolor Society (NPWS) and nearing that status with the Arizona Watercolor Association, Martin has multiple exhibit honors from shows by Vanguard Professional Artists and Sun West Art Club, including a Best of Show. She was accepted and has sold at Glendale Arts Shows, received honorable mention in an international online art magazine competition featuring large animals, and is represented at Del Sol Gallery. Her watercolors hang in private collections across the U.S.A. and in London. Martin is currently working on a faith-inspired notecard series, continuing to express stories through maturing technique, composition, and color that invites viewers into their own moments of the wonder that can be found outside the boundaries.
Artist Statement
How does one paint intuition?
I was taught to color carefully within the lines.
Watercolor, however, prefers a little mischief and keeps inviting me to wander beyond.
Intuition is open, maybe risky, attentive and even faithful in accompanying me to chase the joy of color’s luminosity, delicacy, or audacity, and find my voice somewhere between intention and surprise, where pigment and water mingle and play and begin writing their own story.
There I glimpse what draws me again and again: the vivid life of creation—the fragrance of grass, the call of an unseen bird, the warmth within a human glance.
If these images invite you to linger and notice anew the wonder of God’s creation just beyond the boundaries, then the gift of watercolor has done its work.
