Douglas Sydnor moved to Phoenix in 1955, grew up as the son of an architect and pianist, and is the oldest of five children. Received his Bachelor of Architecture Degree from Arizona State University and a Masters of Architecture Degree from Harvard University. Sydnor has been a practicing architect exclusively in Arizona for 48 years and continues to be active with a series of projects under construction. He has been married 50 years, has three adult children, and two grandchildren.

Creating art started at a very young age and with art classes consistently taken through the school years. In his late teens, the art was represented by Scottsdale’s Dick Seeger Art Gallery.

He is currently an Arizona Artists Guild Juried Member and Scottsdale Public Art Advisory Board Member. Participated in over 20 solo, invited, and juried group exhibitions including Arizona Artists Guild, Scottsdale Artist School; AIA-Arizona, Bentley, Yares, Cattle Track, Mountain Shadows, Scottsdale Heritage Connection Galleries; Scottsdale City Hall, Scottsdale Civic Center Library, GPEC, Beatitudes Campus Town Plaza, and others. Art is in over 50 private and corporate collections; and the permanent collections of Scottsdale Fine Arts and Mesa Contemporary Art Museum. Doug chaired the Scottsdale Sister Cities Association, Inc. ‘Young Artists and Authors Showcase,’ a city-wide high school competition for 10 years; and facilitated 20 art and writing juries. He received the 2020 Arts Hero honor from ONMEDIA and Salt River Project.

Artist Statement

Spontaneity is the content. A wide range of emotions are discovered through a more impulsive method of working and are fully expressed in a series of pieces. Art explores positive messaging, capturing a mystery with visual depth, and structured fragments. Mediums used are mostly water media including acrylic, gouache, and ink. Roots of the work are found in the Sonoran Desert with its varied landscape, textured terrain, intense sunlight, strong shadows with crisp forms that all inform the emotions. As an observer of the natural and built environments, they have been experienced, analyzed and digested. Such observations have influenced compositions, colors and textures. Art often morphs in tangential directions that are unexpected. The unpredictability, surprises, and accidents that unveil themselves are seized and integrated. Compositions are often asymmetrical, work the edges, and bleed off the canvas; which suggests that such images are a glimpse of something greater and carry on indefinitely into a larger universe.
